How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 8 mg once a day. Your doctor might slowly increase your dose every 4 weeks or longer until you reach the right dose for you.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole; do not chew or crush them. Take your dose once a day in the morning with water or another liquid. Try to take it with food. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment to stay hydrated.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 24 mg once a day.

  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)

  • Stomach pain or discomfort

  • Allergic reaction
  • Dehydration (not enough water in the body)
  • Tingling or numbness of the skin
  • Changes in taste
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Problems controlling body or limb movements (extrapyramidal disorder)
  • Blurred vision
  • Persistent ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Flushing
  • Retching (feeling like vomiting)
  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle weakness
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to galantamine or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • This medicine is only for treating Alzheimer's disease symptoms and is not recommended for other types of memory problems or confusion.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver or kidney problems, heart problems (like slow or irregular heartbeat), changes in body salts (electrolytes), stomach ulcers, stomach or bowel blockage, epilepsy, breathing problems (like asthma), or trouble urinating.
  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had surgery on your stomach, bowels, or bladder.

  • This medicine can cause weight loss. Your doctor will check your weight regularly while you are taking it.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children or teenagers.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy or sleepy, especially at the start of treatment. If you feel this way, do not drive or use tools or machines.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you experience severe skin reactions (like blisters or peeling skin), heart problems (like a very slow or fast heartbeat), or seizures.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD.
