How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 8 mg once a day. Your doctor may slowly increase the dose over several weeks until you reach the right dose for you.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water or other liquid in the morning, preferably with food. Do NOT chew or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 24 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea) and throwing up (vomiting)
  • Reduced appetite, weight loss
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Depression
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Muscle tremors or cramps
  • Headache
  • Extreme tiredness, weakness, or feeling generally unwell
  • Extreme drowsiness with low energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Digestion problems
  • Falls
  • Wounds
RARE
  • Allergic reaction
  • Dehydration (not enough water in the body)
  • Tingling or numbness in the skin
  • Changes in taste
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty controlling body or limb movements (extrapyramidal disorder)
  • Blurred vision
  • Constant ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Flushing (redness of the face/skin)
  • Gagging
  • Severe sweating
  • Muscle weakness
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in the blood
  • Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to galantamine or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • This medicine is only for treating Alzheimer's disease symptoms, not other types of memory problems or confusion.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you notice severe skin reactions (like blisters), heart problems (like slow or irregular heartbeat), or seizures.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children or teenagers.

  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially when you first start taking it. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration while taking this medicine.

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD.
