Gabrion is a medicine used to treat epilepsy (seizures) and long-term nerve pain caused by nerve damage.

How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually start with 300-900 mg per day. Your doctor may slowly increase this dose up to a maximum of 3600 mg per day. Children (6 years and older) will receive a dose based on their body weight, typically 25-35 mg per kg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with plenty of water. You can take Gabrion with or without food. Take your daily dose divided into three separate times: once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Viral infection (e.g., flu)
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination
  • Fatigue, fever
  • Pneumonia, respiratory infections, urinary tract infection, ear infection or other infections
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Loss of appetite or increased appetite
  • Aggression, confusion, mood swings, depression, anxiety, nervousness, difficulty thinking
  • Seizures, twitching, speech difficulties, memory loss, tremor, insomnia, headache, skin sensitivity, decreased sensation (numbness), coordination problems, abnormal eye movements, increased/decreased or absent reflexes
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • High blood pressure, flushing or widening of blood vessels
  • Breathing difficulties, bronchitis, sore throat, cough, dry nose lining
  • Vomiting, nausea, dental problems, gingivitis, diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth or throat, flatulence
  • Facial swelling, bruising, rash, itching, acne
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, muscle twitching
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
  • Swelling of legs and arms, walking difficulties, weakness, pain, general feeling of illness, flu-like symptoms
  • Weight gain
  • Accidental injury, fracture, scrape
  • Aggressive behavior and jerky movements (in children)
RARE
  • Agitation (restlessness and involuntary movements)
  • Allergic reaction, such as hives
  • Decreased movement
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swelling that may also affect the face, torso, and limbs
  • Abnormal blood test results indicating liver problems
  • Mental impairment or psychological disturbance
  • Falls
  • Increased blood sugar level (mostly seen in diabetics)
  • Decreased blood sugar level
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Breathing difficulties, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Decreased platelets (cells important for blood clotting)
  • Suicidal thoughts, hallucinations
  • Abnormal movements, such as writhing, jerky movements, and stiffness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation
  • Acute kidney failure, urinary incontinence
  • Increased breast tissue, breast enlargement
  • Withdrawal symptoms after suddenly stopping Gabrion (anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain, sweating)
  • Chest pain
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Changes in blood test results (increased creatine phosphokinase)
  • Sexual dysfunction, including inability to achieve orgasm, delayed ejaculation
  • Low sodium level in blood
  • Anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, swelling of lips, throat, and tongue, and low blood pressure requiring emergency treatment)
  • Development of dependency on Gabrion

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Gabrion if you are allergic to gabapentin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting, as these could be signs of a serious inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Seek medical help right away if you experience thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • Stop taking Gabrion and get urgent medical care if you notice severe skin rashes, such as red patches with blisters, skin peeling, or sores in your mouth, throat, eyes, or genitals. These can be serious reactions.

  • If you experience muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain, especially with a fever or feeling unwell, contact your doctor immediately. This could be a sign of a serious muscle breakdown that can harm your kidneys.
  • Gabrion can make you feel dizzy, drowsy, or tired. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • Be aware that some people may become dependent on Gabrion. Do not stop taking Gabrion suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Take the several interactions in the absorption phase into account. (updated 14.4.2025)
