How to Use

Dosage

Take the number of capsules your doctor prescribes. The dose usually starts between 300-900 mg daily and can be slowly increased up to 3600 mg daily.

Method

Take your daily dose in three separate doses: morning, afternoon, and evening. Swallow the capsules whole with plenty of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Viral infection
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination
  • Tiredness, fever
  • Pneumonia, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, or other infections
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Loss of appetite, increased appetite
  • Hostility, confusion, mood swings, depression, anxiety, nervousness, difficulty thinking
  • Convulsions, jerky movements, speech problems, memory loss, tremor, sleeplessness, headache, skin tenderness, reduced sensation (numbness), coordination problems, unusual eye movements, increased/decreased/absent reflexes
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • High blood pressure, flushed face or widened blood vessels
  • Breathing difficulties, bronchitis, sore throat, cough, dry nose lining
  • Vomiting, nausea, tooth problems, gum inflammation, diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth or throat, flatulence
  • Facial swelling, bruising, rash, itching, acne
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, muscle twitching
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
  • Swelling of arms and legs, difficulty walking, weakness, pain, feeling unwell, flu-like symptoms
  • Decrease in white blood cell count, weight gain
  • Accidental injury, fracture, abrasion
  • Aggressive behavior and jerky movements (in children)
RARE
  • Agitation (restlessness and involuntary movements)
  • Allergic reaction, such as hives
  • Reduced movement
  • Heart palpitations
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swelling that can occur in the face, upper body, and limbs
  • Abnormal blood test results suggesting liver problems
  • Decreased mental performance
  • Falls
  • Increased blood sugar level (most common in diabetics)
  • Decreased blood sugar level (most common in diabetics)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Breathing difficulties, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Decrease in platelets (blood cells important for clotting)
  • Suicidal thoughts, hallucinations
  • Problems with abnormal movements, such as writhing, jerky movements, and stiffness
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation
  • Sudden kidney failure, inability to control urination
  • Increased breast tissue, breast enlargement
  • Side effects from suddenly stopping gabapentin treatment (anxiety, sleeplessness, nausea, pain, sweating), chest pain
  • Muscle tissue breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Changes in blood test results (increased creatine phosphokinase level)
  • Sexual problems, including inability to achieve orgasm, delayed ejaculation
  • Low blood sodium level
  • Anaphylaxis (severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, swelling of lips, throat, and tongue, and low blood pressure requiring immediate treatment)
  • Gabapentin dependence ('drug addiction')

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to gabapentin or any of its ingredients.
  • This medicine can cause dependence. Do not stop taking it suddenly without talking to your doctor.
  • A small number of people taking this medicine have had thoughts of harming themselves. If you have such thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin reactions (like red spots or blisters), muscle weakness/pain with fever, or feel very unwell.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor might change your dose.

  • This medicine can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and tiredness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Taking this medicine with opioid pain relievers (like morphine) can increase side effects such as drowsiness, slowed breathing, and in severe cases, death.
  • If you take antacids, take this medicine at least two hours after your antacid.
