How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 300-900 mg per day, which your doctor may gradually increase up to 3600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with plenty of water, with or without food, exactly as your doctor has prescribed.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Viral infection
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination
  • Tiredness, fever
  • Infections (like pneumonia, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections)
  • Decreased white blood cells
  • Changes in appetite (loss or increase)
  • Mood changes (hostility, confusion, mood swings, depression, anxiety, nervousness, difficulty thinking)
  • Nervous system problems (convulsions, jerky movements, speech problems, memory loss, tremor, insomnia, headache, numbness, tingling, coordination problems, unusual eye movements, changes in reflexes)
  • Vision problems (blurred or double vision)
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • High blood pressure, flushing, widened blood vessels
  • Breathing problems (difficulty breathing, bronchitis, sore throat, cough, dry nose)
  • Digestive issues (vomiting, nausea, tooth problems, inflamed gums, diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth/throat, gas)
  • Skin issues (facial swelling, bruising, rash, itching, acne)
  • Muscle and joint pain (joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, muscle twitching)
  • Erection problems (impotence)
  • Swelling in limbs, walking difficulties, weakness, pain, general unwell feeling, flu-like symptoms
  • Weight gain
  • Accidental injuries (accidents, fractures, scrapes)
  • Aggressive behavior and jerky movements (especially in children)
RARE
  • Agitation (a state of chronic restlessness with involuntary movements)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., hives)
  • Reduced movement
  • Palpitations (fast heartbeat)
  • Swelling of face, body, and limbs
  • Abnormal blood test results indicating liver problems
  • Worsening mental performance
  • Falls
  • Increased blood sugar levels (mostly in diabetics)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Decreased blood sugar levels (mostly in diabetics)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Breathing problems (shallow breathing, respiratory depression)
  • Decreased blood platelets (cells important for clotting)
  • Hallucinations
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Abnormal movements (twisting, jerky movements, stiffness)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation
  • Sudden kidney failure, inability to control urination
  • Increased breast tissue, breast enlargement
  • Withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain, sweating, breast pain) if treatment is stopped suddenly
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Changes in blood test results (increased creatine phosphokinase)
  • Sexual dysfunction (including inability to achieve orgasm, delayed ejaculation)
  • Low sodium levels in blood
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which can be life-threatening and includes breathing difficulties, swelling of lips, throat, and tongue, and low blood pressure requiring immediate treatment.
  • Developing dependence on Gabapentin Sandoz ('drug dependence')

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to gabapentin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, as your dose may need to be changed.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting, as these could be signs of a serious pancreatic issue.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol, prescription drug, or illegal drug misuse, as you may have a higher risk of becoming dependent on Gabapentin Sandoz.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.

  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you develop severe skin reactions like red patches, blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, eyes, or genitals, especially if accompanied by fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain, especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever, as this can be a sign of severe muscle breakdown.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, tell your doctor immediately to discuss the risks to your unborn baby. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and tiredness. Do not drive, use machines, or do other dangerous activities until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Take the several interactions in the absorption phase into account. (updated 14.4.2025)
