How to Use

Dosage

Typically, adults start with 300-900 mg daily, which your doctor may increase up to 3600 mg daily. For children over 6 years, the dose is 25-35 mg/kg daily, based on body weight.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with plenty of water. You can take this medicine with or without food, usually divided into three doses a day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 3600 mg for adults, taken in three separate doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Viral infections
  • Feeling sleepy, dizzy, or clumsy
  • Tiredness, fever
  • Other infections (lungs, airways, urinary tract, ears)
  • Reduced white blood cell count
  • Changes in appetite (more or less hungry)
  • Mood changes (like feeling hostile, confused, depressed, anxious, nervous), difficulty thinking clearly
  • Seizures, jerky movements, speech problems, memory loss, trembling, headache, skin sensitivity, numbness, coordination problems, unusual eye movements, changes in reflexes
  • Blurred vision, seeing double
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • High blood pressure, flushing, widening of blood vessels
  • Breathing problems, bronchitis, sore throat, cough, dry nose
  • Stomach problems (vomiting, nausea, dental issues, gum inflammation, diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth, gas)
  • Skin reactions (facial swelling, bruises, rash, itching, acne)
  • Joint, muscle, or back pain, muscle twitching
  • Erection problems
  • Swelling in arms or legs, difficulty walking, weakness, general pain, feeling unwell, flu-like symptoms
  • Weight gain, accidental injuries (fractures, scrapes)
  • Aggressive behavior or jerky movements (in children)
RARE
  • Agitation, restlessness
  • Allergic reactions, like hives
  • Changes in blood sugar levels (high or low), especially in people with diabetes
  • Decreased movement
  • Heart palpitations
  • Swelling of the face, body, or limbs
  • Mental health problems (e.g., psychosis, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts)
  • Falls or accidents
  • Abnormal liver blood test results, yellowing of skin/eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Breathing problems, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Low platelet count (blood cells for clotting), low sodium in the blood
  • Abnormal movements (like writhing, jerking, stiffness)
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Muscle tissue breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Acute kidney failure, problems with urinary control
  • Breast enlargement or increased breast tissue (in men)
  • Sexual problems (e.g., trouble having an orgasm, delayed ejaculation)
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop the medicine suddenly (e.g., anxiety, trouble sleeping, nausea, pain, sweating, chest pain)
  • Changes in blood test results (e.g., increased creatine phosphokinase)
  • Anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, swelling of lips/throat/tongue, and low blood pressure)
  • Dependence on the medicine

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Gabapentin Orion if you are allergic to gabapentin or any other ingredients.
  • If you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, your doctor might change your dose. Tell your doctor if you experience muscle pain or weakness during dialysis.
  • Seek medical help immediately if you get severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting, as these could be signs of a serious pancreas problem.
  • Stop taking Gabapentin Orion and see a doctor right away if you develop severe skin rashes, like red spots, blisters, skin peeling, or swelling of lymph nodes, fever, and flu-like symptoms, as these can be life-threatening allergic reactions.
  • A small number of people taking gabapentin have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you have such thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
