How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 300–900 mg per day, and your doctor may increase it up to 3,600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules by mouth with plenty of water, usually three times a day: in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

The maximum daily dose is 3,600 mg, divided into three doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Virus infection
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination
  • Fatigue, fever
  • Pneumonia, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, or other infections
  • Decreased white blood cell count
  • Loss of appetite, increased appetite
  • Hostility, confusion, mood swings, depression, anxiety, nervousness, difficulty thinking
  • Convulsions, twitching movements, speech problems, memory loss, tremors, insomnia, headache, sensitive skin, numbness, coordination problems, abnormal eye movements, increased or decreased reflexes
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • High blood pressure, flushing, redness or widening of blood vessels
  • Breathing problems, bronchitis, sore throat, cough, dry nasal mucous membranes
  • Vomiting, nausea, tooth problems, gum inflammation, diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth or throat, gas
  • Facial swelling, bruising, rash, itching, acne
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, muscle twitching
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
  • Swelling of legs and arms, difficulty walking, weakness, pain, general feeling of being unwell, flu-like symptoms
  • Weight gain
  • Accidental injury, fracture, abrasion
  • Aggressive behavior (in children)
RARE
  • Agitation (a state of chronic restlessness with involuntary and purposeless movements)
  • Allergic reaction, such as hives
  • Decreased movement
  • Palpitations
  • Swelling that may affect the face, upper body, and limbs
  • Abnormal blood test results indicating liver problems
  • Mental disorder
  • Falls
  • Increased blood sugar level (mostly in diabetics)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Lowered blood sugar level (mostly in diabetics)
  • Breathing problems, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Development of dependence on Gabapentin Accord (drug dependence)
  • Decreased number of platelets (blood cells involved in clotting)
  • Self-harm thoughts, hallucinations
  • Problems with abnormal movements, such as writhing, jerking movements, and stiffness
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation
  • Acute kidney failure, inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Increased breast tissue, breast enlargement
  • Side effects from suddenly stopping gabapentin (anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain, sweating), chest pain
  • Breakdown of muscle tissue (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Changes in blood test results (increased blood creatinine phosphokinase level)
  • Sexual dysfunction including inability to achieve orgasm, delayed ejaculation
  • Lowered blood sodium level
  • Anaphylaxis (severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, swelling of lips, throat and tongue, and low blood pressure requiring immediate treatment)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to gabapentin or any other ingredients of the medicine.
  • Stop taking Gabapentin Accord and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a severe skin rash, fever, swollen glands, or yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience persistent stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting, as these can be signs of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Talk to your doctor if you feel you need to keep taking the medicine or are taking more than prescribed, as you might become dependent.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.

  • Seek medical attention if you have difficulty breathing, especially if severe, as it might require emergency care.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Take the several interactions in the absorption phase into account. (updated 14.4.2025)
