How to Use

Dosage

For treating infections, take one 50 mg capsule four times a day, or one 100 mg capsule twice a day, for seven days. For preventing infections, take one 50 mg or one 100 mg capsule at bedtime.

Method

Always take Furuti with food or milk. Swallow the capsules whole.

Important

The highest amount you should take in one day for treatment is 200 mg.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Bone marrow damage, leading to a lack of red blood cells (anemia).
  • Severe allergic reaction (sudden wheezing, trouble breathing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, rash, itching).
  • Group of blood disorders affecting nerves or skin (acute porphyria).
  • Lung reactions (fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, faintness, bluish skin, lung scarring).
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation, or liver failure (which can be deadly).
  • Damage to nerves outside the spinal cord, causing changes in feeling and muscle function (numbness, tingling, weakness), headache, extreme mood changes, confusion, weakness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. These effects can be serious and sometimes permanent.
  • Increased pressure inside the skull, causing severe headache.
  • Bluish or purplish skin color due to low oxygen levels (cyanosis).
  • Symptoms like fever, flu, stomach pain, diarrhea, blood in stools, and weakness (signs of a condition called cutaneous vasculitis).
  • Symptoms like yellowing of skin, tiredness, stomach pain, joint pain, and swelling (signs of autoimmune hepatitis).
COMMON
  • Changes in blood cells, which can cause bruising, slower blood clotting, sore throat, fever, anemia, or more frequent colds.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Diarrhea (loose stools).
  • Loss of appetite, stomach pain, and nausea.
  • Various skin rashes or reactions, including peeling skin, red rash, fever, fast heart rate, and blistering rash.
  • Inflammation of salivary glands (face pain) or pancreas (severe stomach pain).
  • Joint pain.
  • Tiredness, chills, and fever caused by the medicine.
  • Temporary hair loss.
  • Urinary tract infection caused by bacteria that Furuti cannot treat.
  • Inflammation of small blood vessels, which causes skin damage.
  • Liver inflammation due to an immune system reaction against liver cells.
  • Kidney tissue inflammation, which can lead to reduced kidney function.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Furuti if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Do not take Furuti if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take Furuti in late pregnancy, during labor, or if you are breastfeeding a baby younger than 3 months.
  • Do not take Furuti if you have a special enzyme shortage called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
  • Do not take Furuti if you have porphyria, a rare blood disorder that affects your nerves or skin.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs (nerve damage).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have anemia (low red blood cells), vitamin B deficiency, or abnormal salt levels in your blood.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have any lung, liver, or nervous system disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are elderly.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diarrhea caused by a specific germ called Clostridioides difficile.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have signs of liver problems, such as tiredness, yellow skin or eyes, itching, rash, joint pain, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or dark urine and pale stools.
  • Do not drive or operate machines if Furuti makes you feel dizzy or sleepy.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Do not use in moderately severe and severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include pulmonary changes and peripheral neuropathy. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. (updated 4.12.2023)
