How to Use

Dosage

For treatment: one 50 mg capsule four times a day, or one 100 mg capsule twice a day for seven days. For prevention: one 50 mg or 100 mg capsule once daily at bedtime.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with food or milk to avoid stomach upset and improve absorption.

Important

The maximum daily dose for treatment is 200 mg (e.g., four 50 mg capsules or two 100 mg capsules).

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Bone marrow damage causing a lack of red blood cells (anemia). Changes in blood cells that can cause bruising, slow blood clotting, sore throat, fever, or anemia.
  • Feeling unwell, diarrhea (loose stools), loss of appetite, stomach pain, and nausea.
  • Various skin rashes or reactions, including severe hypersensitivity reactions (DRESS syndrome), peeling skin, red rash, fever, and blisters. Inflammation of small blood vessels causing skin damage.
  • Inflammation of salivary glands (facial pain), pancreas (severe abdominal pain), and joint pain.
  • Effects on the nervous system, such as changes in sensation, muscle dysfunction, headache, extreme mood or mental state changes (psychosis), confusion, weakness, involuntary eye movements, and blurred vision.
  • Fatigue, chills, and drug-induced fever. Temporary hair loss.
  • Urinary tract infection (caused by bacteria not sensitive to the medicine). Liver inflammation (from immune system reaction). Kidney tissue inflammation, which can lead to kidney failure.
  • Furuti may interfere with the results of some urine glucose tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin, similar medicines (nitrofurans), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if your kidneys do not work well (kidney failure, eGFR below 45 ml/min). Talk to your doctor if your eGFR is between 30–44 ml/min.
  • Do not use in late pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or if giving to an infant under 3 months old.
  • Do not use if you have a lack of a certain enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, G6PD).
  • Do not use if you have a blood disorder called porphyria.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have numbness or weakness in your hands or feet.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have anemia (low red blood cells), vitamin B deficiency, or abnormal salt levels in your blood.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a lung, liver, or nervous system disease. Your doctor may check their function regularly if you use this medicine for a long time.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are elderly.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diarrhea caused by the Clostridioides difficile bacterium.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking other antibiotics.
  • Seek medical help if you have fatigue, yellow skin or eyes, itching, rash, joint pain, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, or pale stools. These can be signs of liver problems.
  • If Furuti causes dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • If you have lactose intolerance, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • STOP taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, rash, or itching (especially all over the body).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Do not use in moderately severe and severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include pulmonary changes and peripheral neuropathy. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. (updated 4.12.2023)
