How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine the correct dose for you. Typically, the starting dose for adults is 20-40 mg. For children, the dose is based on weight, starting with 0.5-1 mg/kg.

Method

This medicine is usually given as a slow injection into a vein or muscle, or sometimes as a continuous infusion (drip) into a vein.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is 1,500 mg. For children under 15 years, the maximum dose is 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin rashes (itching, redness, peeling), easy bruising, or skin sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Changes in blood cells that may increase the risk of bleeding.
RARE
  • Nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, stomach discomfort.
  • Hearing problems, ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Kidney damage (inflammation of the kidney tissue).
  • Very low white blood cell count (can lead to life-threatening infections).
  • Muscle problems, including leg cramps, muscle weakness, twitching, spasms, or convulsions.
  • Pain or discomfort at the injection site.
  • Appearance or worsening of lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  • Changes in blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Numbness, tingling sensation.
  • Dizziness, fever, blurred vision, confusion, drowsiness.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain).
  • Liver problems or changes in blood liver enzyme levels, which may cause jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine, tiredness).
  • Very low blood pressure, causing lightheadedness or dizziness.
  • Low blood calcium, potassium, or sodium levels (can cause symptoms like muscle weakness, cramps, or irregular heartbeats).
  • Gout may develop or worsen.
  • Diabetes may develop or worsen.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to furosemide or antibiotics of the sulfonamide group.
  • Do not use if you are severely dehydrated or have kidney failure and do not produce urine.
  • Do not use if your blood potassium or sodium levels are very low, or if you have severe liver disease leading to a coma.
  • Do not breastfeed while using this medication.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines, especially at the start of treatment, when your dose changes, or with alcohol.
