How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for swelling or very high blood pressure is 20-40 mg. Your doctor may slowly increase this dose as needed.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a slow injection into a vein or into a muscle in special cases. Sometimes, it may be given as a continuous infusion (drip) into a vein.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 1500 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure (can cause dizziness, fainting, or loss of consciousness).
  • Changes in blood salts (electrolytes), dehydration, and reduced blood volume, especially in elderly patients. Symptoms include increased thirst, headache, dizziness, fainting, confusion, joint or muscle pain/weakness, cramps, upset stomach, irregular heartbeat, and increased blood fats.
  • Increased levels of creatinine in the blood.
  • Thicker blood (due to urinating too much).
  • Lower blood sodium, chloride, and potassium, higher cholesterol and uric acid, and gout attacks.
  • Brain problems in patients with severe liver failure (hepatic encephalopathy).
  • Increased amount of urine.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling of face, trouble breathing, fainting) and severe skin reactions (e.g., red spots, blisters, skin peeling, flu-like symptoms, fever, ulcers).
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness (rhabdomyolysis), often with very low potassium.
  • Changes in blood cell counts (platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells), potentially leading to bleeding, infections, or fatigue; also inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis).
  • Changes in sugar tolerance (can worsen or reveal hidden diabetes).
  • Hearing problems, including temporary or permanent deafness and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Stomach issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or acute pancreas inflammation.
  • Itching, hives, rash, or increased skin sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Kidney damage, calcium deposits in kidneys, or kidney stones (especially in premature infants); urinary tract obstruction symptoms or urinary retention.
  • Liver disease (intrahepatic cholestasis), increased liver enzymes, or jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine, fatigue).
  • Worsening or activation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
  • Low blood calcium or magnesium levels, or acidic blood (metabolic acidosis), which can cause muscle spasms or heart rhythm problems.
  • Blood clots (thrombosis), especially in elderly patients.
  • Increased risk of a heart vessel staying open in premature infants (patent ductus arteriosus).
  • Pain after muscle injection.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to furosemide or sulfonamide antibiotics.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney or liver disease, or if you cannot produce urine.
  • Do not use if your blood potassium or sodium levels are very low.
  • Do not use if you have reduced blood volume or are severely dehydrated.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
