How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the starting dose is usually 20-40 mg daily for swelling or 40 mg once daily for high blood pressure. Your doctor will adjust the dose for you.

Method

Take the tablet(s) with a glass of water at least 30 minutes before a meal. The 40 mg tablet can be divided.

Important

For swelling, additional doses of 80 mg and then 160 mg can be taken after 6 hours if needed. For high blood pressure, the dose can be increased up to 60 mg daily. For children under 18, the maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in mineral levels in the body (e.g., low potassium, sodium, chloride, or high uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides).
  • Dehydration, reduced blood volume, or more concentrated blood due to fluid loss.
  • Lower than normal blood pressure, or dizziness/fainting when standing up.
  • Increased creatinine in blood (a kidney function marker).
  • Increased thirst, muscle or joint pain/weakness, cramps, stomach upset, or irregular heartbeat.
  • Increased amount of urine.
RARE
  • Bleeding from skin and mucous membranes, or bruises (due to low platelet count).
  • Severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening allergic shock.
  • Kidney inflammation or kidney failure.
  • Severe anemia (low red blood cells) with yellowish skin and eyes.
  • Very low blood cell count (red, white, or platelets) due to poor production.
  • Severe stomach or back pain and fever due to pancreas inflammation.
  • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes) due to reduced bile flow.
  • Worsening of an inflammatory disease like lupus (SLE), causing joint pain, rash, and fever.
  • Severe, life-threatening skin reactions with blisters, peeling skin, and fever.
  • Muscle pain, weakness, or brown urine from muscle breakdown, potentially leading to kidney failure.
  • Allergic skin and mucous membrane reactions (e.g., hives, rash, itching).
  • Increased blood sugar levels or impaired glucose tolerance.
  • Hearing problems (often temporary, sometimes permanent deafness), ringing in the ears.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever.
  • Red or purple spots on the skin, increased sensitivity to light.
  • Tingling, burning, or numbness (sensory disturbances).
  • Inflammation of blood vessels.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Low calcium or magnesium levels in blood.
  • Increased pH in blood (alkaline blood).
  • Blocked urine flow, inability to empty bladder.
  • Dizziness, fainting, loss of consciousness, headache.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to furosemide or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney failure and are not producing enough urine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems that cause confusion or loss of consciousness.
  • Do not use if you have very low potassium or sodium levels in your blood.
  • Do not use if you are very dehydrated or have low blood volume.
