How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually start with 5-15 mg per day, and children over 6 years with 5 mg per day. Your doctor will tell you your exact dose.

Method

You can take the tablets whole, crushed, or mixed with applesauce. You can take them with or without food.

Important

The most adults can take in a day is 80 mg (8 tablets).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sleepy (especially at the start or with high doses).
  • Feeling very tired (especially at the start or with high doses).
  • Not feeling hungry.
  • Feeling irritable, aggressive, restless, depressed, or anxious with movement; drug tolerance.
  • Feeling calm or sleepy, dizzy, having trouble focusing, slow speech, or slurred speech (can get better when stopping the medicine, especially with high or long-term doses), headache, shaking, clumsiness (ataxia).
  • Dry mouth, feeling sick, or constipation.
RARE
  • Severe rash, possibly with blisters or sores on skin and mucous membranes.
  • Thoughts about suicide.
  • Strange behavior, feeling confused, anxious, having false beliefs, nightmares, or less interest in sex (can get better when stopping the medicine, especially with high or long-term doses).
  • Feeling dull, memory loss (possibly with strange behavior), forgetting new things (especially with high doses, even at normal doses).
  • Seeing double (can get better when stopping the medicine, especially with high or long-term doses).
  • Skin rash.
  • Gaining weight (especially with high or long-term doses).
  • Falls.
  • Addiction (especially with long-term use), trouble falling asleep at the start of treatment, anger, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), severe mental issues (psychotic disorders), poor sleep.
  • Thinking problems, altered state of awareness (especially in older patients or with breathing problems), eye twitching (nystagmus), or trouble walking (gait disturbance) (can get better when stopping the medicine, especially with high or long-term doses).
  • Slow or stopped breathing, or breathing failure (especially in patients with existing breathing problems like asthma or brain injury).
  • Hives.
  • Muscle cramps or muscle weakness.
  • Slow reactions to things, or low body temperature.

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can cause dependence.
  • Do not use if you have a serious muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis.
  • Do not use if you have serious breathing problems.
  • Do not use if you have sleep apnea (when you stop breathing during sleep).
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.

  • Do not use while breastfeeding.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it makes the medicine's effects stronger.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly or change your dose without talking to your doctor first.
  • This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy or for women who might get pregnant and are not using birth control.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy and weak. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
  • Do not take this medicine with opioid pain relievers unless your doctor says so, as it can cause serious breathing problems, coma, or even death.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself, talk to your doctor right away.
  • If you get a severe rash that worsens, stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately.
