How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how much Fragmin to take, as your dose is specially chosen for you. For children, the doctor calculates the dose based on their weight and age.

Fragmin is given as an injection under the skin.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • A small decrease in blood platelets, which usually gets better during treatment.
  • Higher potassium levels in your blood, especially if you have long-term kidney problems or diabetes.
  • Bleeding.
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes.
  • Bruising or pain where the injection was given.
RARE
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Local skin damage (necrosis).
  • Temporary hair loss.
  • Rashes.
  • Severe allergic reactions.
  • A severe decrease in blood platelets caused by heparin.
  • Bleeding inside your head.
  • Internal bleeding in the abdomen.
  • Blood clot in or around the spinal cord.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Fragmin if you are allergic to dalteparin sodium, heparin, or any other ingredient in Fragmin.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a doctor-diagnosed low number of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia).
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had bleeding in the brain or any other active bleeding.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had an increased tendency to bleed.

  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a sudden or recent bacterial infection of the heart.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had an injury or surgery to your brain, spinal cord, eyes, or ears.
  • If you are going to have spinal or epidural anesthesia or any other spinal procedure, you cannot be given high doses of Fragmin because it increases the risk of bleeding.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are allergic to latex (natural rubber) and are handling pre-filled syringes, as the needle shield may contain latex.
  • Fragmin should not be given to newborn babies under 1 month old.

Category C
