How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your specific dose based on your condition. For children, the dose is based on their weight and age.

Method

Fragmin is given as an injection under the skin.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mild decrease in blood platelets, which usually gets better during treatment.
  • Increased potassium in the blood, especially in patients with kidney problems or diabetes.
  • Bleeding.
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes.
  • Bruising or pain at the injection site.
RARE
  • Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction).
  • Local skin tissue death.
  • Temporary hair loss.
  • Rash.
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic reactions).
  • Severe decrease in blood platelets caused by heparin.
  • Bleeding inside the skull.
  • Bleeding behind the abdomen (retroperitoneal bleeding).
  • Blood clot around the brain or spinal cord (epidural or spinal hematoma).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Fragmin if you are allergic to dalteparin, heparin, or any other ingredients in Fragmin.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a low blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a brain hemorrhage or other active bleeding.
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had an increased tendency to bleed.

  • Do not use Fragmin if you have or have had a bacterial infection in your heart (septice endocarditis).
  • Do not use Fragmin if you have had an injury or surgery to your brain, spinal cord, eyes, or ears.
  • If you are having spinal or epidural anesthesia or a spinal puncture, high doses of Fragmin cannot be given due to increased bleeding risk.
  • Some Fragmin syringes may contain latex, so tell your doctor if you are allergic to latex.
  • Do not use Fragmin in newborns younger than 1 month old.

Category C
