How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your diet and blood phosphate levels, usually 750 mg or 1000 mg three times daily.

Method

Mix the entire contents of one sachet with 1–2 tablespoons of soft food (like applesauce) and eat it right away (within 15 minutes), with or right after a meal. No extra liquid is needed.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose based on your blood phosphate levels.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Heartburn
  • Gas or bloating
  • Constipation
  • Low calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia), which can cause tingling in hands and feet, or muscle cramps in your muscles or face.
RARE
  • Bowel perforation (a hole in the bowel wall) with symptoms like severe stomach pain, chills, fever, feeling sick, vomiting, or a tender stomach. Seek medical help immediately.
  • Bowel blockage (something blocking your bowel) with symptoms like severe bloating, stomach pain, swelling or cramps, or very bad constipation. Seek medical help immediately.
  • Fatigue (feeling very tired)
  • Dizziness or feeling like the room is spinning (vertigo)
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Hair loss
  • Dry mouth
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling of hands or feet

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Fosrenol if you are allergic to lanthanum carbonate hydrate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Fosrenol if you have very low phosphate levels in your blood (hypophosphatemia).
  • Do not take Fosrenol if you have a blocked bowel (bowel obstruction).
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, as Fosrenol can affect how they are absorbed. Some medicines must be taken at a different time than Fosrenol.
  • Do not use Fosrenol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
