How to Use

Dosage

Usually, you start with one tablet at each meal, which means 3 tablets per day. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on your blood phosphate levels.

Method

Take Fosrenol with food or right after eating. Chew the tablets completely; do not swallow them whole. You can crush them to make chewing easier, and you don't need water.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose to reach an acceptable phosphate level in your blood.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain.
  • Headache, itching, rash, heartburn, gas.
  • Low calcium in blood (hypocalcemia) which can cause tingling in hands and feet, muscle cramps, or face/feet twitching.
RARE
  • Bowel wall rupture (severe stomach pain, chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, or a tender stomach). Seek immediate medical help if these occur.
  • Bowel blockage (severe stomach bloating, stomach pain, swelling or cramps, or severe constipation). Contact your doctor right away if you get new or severe constipation.
  • Tiredness, general discomfort, chest pain, weakness, swollen hands or feet, body aches.
  • Dizziness, spinning sensation (vertigo), burping, stomach flu (gastroenteritis), indigestion, irritable bowel, dry mouth, dental problems, throat or mouth swelling, loose stools.
  • Changes in liver or blood tests (like blood sugar or hormone levels), thirst, weight changes, joint or muscle pain, weak bones (osteoporosis).
  • Changes in appetite, voice box swelling, hair loss, increased sweating, taste changes.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Fosrenol if you are allergic to lanthanum carbonate hydrate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Fosrenol if you have very low phosphate levels in your blood (hypophosphatemia).
  • Do not take Fosrenol if you have a bowel blockage.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had stomach or bowel cancer.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had inflammatory bowel disease, like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had stomach or bowel surgery, a stomach/bowel infection, a stomach ulcer, or a bowel ulcer.
  • Tell your doctor if you have slow bowel movements, for example, due to diabetes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines you are taking, as Fosrenol can affect how some medicines work.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you experience new or severe constipation, as this could be an early sign of a bowel blockage.
