How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take based on your diet and blood phosphate levels; the usual starting dose is one tablet with each meal (three tablets daily), which can be adjusted.

Method

Take the tablets with food or right after a meal. Chew the tablets well or crush them, do not swallow them whole.

Important

Your doctor will adjust your dose regularly until your blood phosphate levels are at an acceptable level.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Stomach pain, heartburn, or gas.
  • Headache.
  • Itching or skin rash.
  • Low calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia), which can cause tingling in hands and feet, or muscle cramps in your belly, face, or feet.
RARE
  • Severe stomach pain, chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, or a tender stomach (signs of a serious problem like a bowel wall rupture). Seek medical help right away.
  • Severe bloating, stomach pain, swelling, cramps, or severe constipation (signs of a blocked bowel). Seek medical help right away if you get new or worse constipation.
  • Tiredness, general discomfort, chest pain, weakness, body aches, dizziness, vertigo (spinning sensation), or belching.
  • Swollen hands and feet, inflammation of the gut (gastroenteritis), indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, dry mouth, dental problems, inflammation of the esophagus or mouth, loose stools, or drug residues found in the gut.
  • High or low levels of liver enzymes, parathyroid hormone, aluminum, calcium, glucose, or phosphate in the blood, or increased white blood cells.
  • Thirst, weight loss, joint pain, muscle pain, weak bones (osteoporosis), loss or increase of appetite, throat inflammation, hair loss, increased sweating, or changes in taste.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to lanthanum carbonate hydrate or any other ingredient in Fosrenol.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have too little phosphate in your blood (hypophosphatemia).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a blocked bowel.
  • Chew Fosrenol tablets thoroughly; do not swallow them whole, as this can cause gut problems.
  • Do not use Fosrenol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have or have had stomach or bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), stomach ulcers, bowel problems due to diabetes, abdominal surgery, or liver or kidney problems.
