How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose and how often you get it. This depends on your infection, how severe it is, your kidney function, and for children, their weight and age. Your dose might be lower if you have kidney problems or need dialysis.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) by a doctor or nurse. The drip usually takes 15 to 60 minutes, depending on your dose.

Important

You will usually receive this medicine 2, 3, or 4 times a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Confusion, muscle twitching, or abnormal heart rhythm (can be caused by high sodium or low potassium in your blood).
  • Pain, burning, redness, or swelling where the medicine is given into your vein.
  • Changes in taste.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden wheezing, dizziness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, or tongue, rash or itching.
  • Severe and lasting diarrhea with stomach pain or fever, which could mean serious inflammation in your bowel. Do not take medicines that stop bowel movements.
  • Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice), which can be an early sign of liver problems.
  • Bleeding or bruising more easily, or getting more infections than usual (due to low white blood cell or platelet counts).
  • Feeling sick, throwing up, or mild diarrhea.
  • Headache.
  • High levels of liver enzymes in your blood, possibly linked to liver problems.
  • Skin rash.
  • Feeling weak.
  • Liver problems (hepatitis).
  • Itching or hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to fosfomycin or any of its ingredients.
  • This medicine can cause serious side effects, such as severe allergic reactions, inflammation of the colon, or a drop in white blood cells. Watch out for any new symptoms and tell your doctor or nurse right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems like heart failure or high blood pressure, especially if you take digitalis medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems or need dialysis, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Let your doctor know if you have a specific hormone disorder (hyperaldosteronism) or high sodium levels in your blood.

  • Tell your doctor if you have fluid buildup in your lungs.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • If you are taking blood thinners, tell your doctor, as this medicine can affect how they work.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning to be, tell your doctor. This medicine will only be given if clearly necessary.
  • This medicine can make you feel confused or weak. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these effects.
  • This medicine contains sodium. If you are on a low-salt diet, discuss this with your doctor and follow a low-salt diet during treatment.
