Foscarnet Tillomed

Foscarnet Tillomed is an antiviral medicine that stops viruses from multiplying, used to treat certain eye infections and herpes simplex virus in people with weakened immune systems.

How to Use

Dosage

For CMV (Cytomegalovirus) infection: Induction dose is typically 60 mg/kg three times a day or 90 mg/kg twice a day. Maintenance dose is 90-120 mg/kg once a day. For Herpes simplex virus: 40 mg/kg.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion (drip) into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

Up to 180 mg per kg of body weight per day, depending on the infection being treated and treatment phase.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or feeling sick (vomiting)
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • High fever or chills
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Headache
  • Tingling sensation on the skin
  • Rash
  • Changes in kidney function (seen in blood tests)
  • Low white blood cell count (symptoms include infections and fever)
  • Changes in red blood cells (seen in blood tests, may make you feel tired or pale)
  • Disturbances in blood salt and mineral balance (symptoms include weakness, cramps, thirst, tingling or itching skin, and muscle twitching)
  • Stomach pain, constipation, digestive problems or bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or changes in pancreas function (symptoms include severe stomach pain and possible changes in blood tests)
  • Feelings of anxiety, nervousness, depression, agitation, aggression, or confusion
  • Coordination problems
  • Seizures
  • Reduced sensation in the skin
  • Itchy skin
  • General feeling of being unwell
  • Swelling of the feet and legs
  • Palpitations or changes in heart rhythm, such as fast heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • High blood pressure
  • Low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness
  • Changes observed in heart function tests (ECG)
  • Muscle problems (changes seen in blood tests, muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or twitching)
  • Tremor
  • Nerve damage, which may cause changes in sensation or muscle weakness (neuropathy)
  • Swelling, pain, and redness at the vein or injection site
  • Genital ulcers
  • Changes in liver function (seen in blood tests)
  • Low platelet count, which may cause easier bruising
  • Blood infection
  • Kidney problems (including kidney stones, which may feel like lower back pain, and kidney failure; changes may be seen in blood or urine tests)
  • More frequent urination than usual. Rarely, you may feel very thirsty or dehydrated.
  • Chest pain
RARE
  • Itchy rash (hives)
  • Too much acid in the blood, which may cause rapid breathing
  • Low count of all blood cells (pancytopenia)
  • Abnormal heartbeat
  • Esophageal ulcer, which may be painful
  • Severe muscle problems with breakdown of muscle tissue (rhabdomyolysis). Symptoms include unusual urine color and significant muscle weakness, tenderness, or stiffness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to foscarnet sodium hexahydrate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have kidney or heart problems.
  • This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy. Use effective birth control during and for six months after treatment.
  • Men should not father a child during or for six months after Foscarnet Tillomed treatment.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.

  • Drink plenty of fluids during the infusion to help prevent kidney problems.
  • If Foscarnet Tillomed accidentally gets on your skin or in your eyes, rinse immediately with water.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe allergic reactions (e.g., low blood pressure, shock, swelling of the skin) or severe skin rashes (e.g., redness, blisters on skin, mouth, throat, eyes).
