How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg or 850 mg, taken 2–3 times a day. For children and adolescents (10 years and older), the starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, with or after a meal, to avoid stomach problems. Do not crush or chew the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3000 mg, divided into three doses. For children and adolescents (10 years and older), the maximum dose is 2000 mg, divided into two or three doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite.
  • Taste disturbance.
  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause tiredness, pale skin, or tingling.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis: vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general weakness and severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, decreased body temperature, and slowed heart rate.
  • Liver problems or hepatitis (liver inflammation), which can cause tiredness, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
  • Skin reactions, such as skin redness, itching, or hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have liver problems or severe kidney problems.
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled diabetes, severe high blood sugar, ketoacidosis, or a risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not use if you are severely dehydrated (e.g., due to diarrhea or vomiting) or have a severe infection that could affect kidney function.
  • Do not use if you have sudden heart failure, a recent heart attack, or severe circulation problems.

  • Avoid heavy alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • If you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, tiredness, difficulty breathing, decreased body temperature, or slowed heart rate), stop Forminet immediately and contact a doctor or hospital at once.
  • Forminet is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding; talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Inform your doctor if you are having surgery or an imaging scan with contrast, as Forminet treatment may need to be stopped temporarily.
