How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg or 850 mg, taken 2-3 times a day. For children aged 10 and above, it's usually 500 mg or 850 mg once a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew them. Take Forminet with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. If you take it once a day, take it in the morning. If twice, morning and evening. If three times, morning, midday, and evening.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is 3000 mg, divided into three doses. For children and adolescents (10+), the maximum daily dose is 2000 mg, divided into two or three doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. These often occur at the start of treatment.
  • Taste disturbance.
  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause extreme tiredness, a sore red tongue, tingling, or pale/yellow skin.
RARE
  • Abnormal liver function tests or hepatitis (liver inflammation) that can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. If this happens, stop taking Forminet and contact your doctor.
  • Skin reactions such as redness, itching, or hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Do not take if your diabetes is uncontrolled, or if you have severe high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or are at risk of lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take if you are severely dehydrated (e.g., from long-lasting diarrhea or vomiting), have a severe infection, acute heart failure, recently had a heart attack, severe circulation problems (like shock), or severe breathing difficulties.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.

  • If you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very unwell, severe tiredness, breathing difficulties, low body temperature, slow heartbeat), stop taking Forminet immediately and contact a doctor or nearest hospital as this is a medical emergency.
  • You must stop taking Forminet for a period before and after certain medical procedures, like X-rays with iodine contrast or major surgery. Your doctor will advise you.
