Foragen

Foragen contains nitrofurantoin, which kills bacteria that cause most urinary tract infections, and is used to treat acute urinary tract infections in adults and children 12 years and older.

How to Use

Dosage

One capsule twice daily (one in the morning and one in the evening). Treatment usually lasts for 7 days.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with food or a dairy product, such as milk or yogurt. Do not open or chew the capsule.

Important

Two capsules per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Urinary tract infection caused by bacteria not sensitive to Foragen
  • Temporary hair loss
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain and vomiting
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
RARE
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Loss of consciousness (collapse)
  • Bluish or grayish color of the skin, nails, lips, or around the eyes (cyanosis)
  • Nerve problems (tingling, numbness, weakness)
  • Strong feeling of excitement or happiness (euphoria)
  • Inflammation of salivary glands (facial pain), pancreatitis (severe stomach pain), joint pain
  • Inflammation of small blood vessels (causes skin damage)
  • Liver inflammation (caused by immune system)
  • Kidney inflammation, potentially leading to kidney failure

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney disease.
  • Do not use if you have porphyria (a rare blood disorder).
  • Do not use if you have G6PD deficiency.
  • Do not use if you have previously had lung, liver, or nerve problems (like tingling or numbness in limbs) with nitrofurantoin or similar medicines.

  • Do not give to infants under 3 months old.
  • Do not use in late pregnancy (38-42 weeks) or during labor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have symptoms of liver disease such as fatigue, yellow skin or eyes, itching, rash, joint pain, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, or pale stools.
  • If you experience tingling, numbness, or weakness in your hands or feet, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor.
  • Stop taking the medicine immediately and contact your doctor if you develop lung or liver complications.
  • If you are of black ethnicity or from the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern or Asian region and experience fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath during treatment, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor (may be a sign of anemia).
  • This medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Do not drive or use machines until symptoms have disappeared.
  • This medicine contains lactose and sucrose. Talk to your doctor if you have a sugar intolerance.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Do not use in moderately severe and severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include pulmonary changes and peripheral neuropathy. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. (updated 4.12.2023)
