How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typical dosage is 1 mg daily for folic acid deficiency anemia, 4 mg daily for preventing neural tube defects in pregnancy, and for rheumatoid arthritis, 1 mg daily or 4–7.5 mg once a week. For children, the dose is up to 1 mg daily for anemia, or 1 mg daily or 1 mg per 10 kg body weight once a week for rheumatoid arthritis.

Important

The highest recommended daily dose for adults is 4 mg for preventing neural tube defects; the maximum dose for children for anemia is 1 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as skin redness, rash, itching, nausea, and breathing difficulties due to narrowed airways.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction).
  • Stomach problems, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and problems with thinking (with large doses, 15 mg/day).
  • Decrease in B12 vitamin levels in the blood (with long-term treatment).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to folic acid or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor before using this if you have anemia that has not been diagnosed.
  • Be careful if you are taking phenytoin (epilepsy medicine), as it may increase epileptic seizures.
  • Taking chloramphenicol (antibiotic) at the same time may reduce the effect of Foliver tablets.
  • If you have an intolerance to certain sugars (lactose), talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
