How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 5 mg daily for about 2 weeks, or as directed by your doctor. For preventing birth defects, it's 5 mg daily. For children (6-17) with megaloblastic anemia, it's 5 mg daily for 4 months.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth. You can divide the tablet into two equal doses if needed. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.

Important

In some cases, especially with poor absorption, a daily dose of up to 15 mg may be needed. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions like itching, rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, and trouble breathing or swallowing.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions such as itching and rash.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), not wanting to eat (loss of appetite), feeling bloated, and gas.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Folic acid Vitabalans if you are allergic to folic acid or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have cancer.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency or anemia of unknown cause.
  • Folic acid Vitabalans should not be used for children under 6 years old.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medicines, especially those for epilepsy (phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone), infections (chloramphenicol, sulfonamides, trimethoprim), or inflammatory bowel/joint diseases (sulfasalazine, methotrexate).
