How to Use

Dosage

Adults: 20–80 mg daily. Children (9 years and older): Starting dose 20 mg daily. Your doctor may adjust the dose.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food. Take your dose in the evening or at bedtime. If you take it twice a day, take one in the morning and one in the evening.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sleep problems
  • Headache
  • Stomach discomfort, e.g. indigestion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Abnormal blood test results for liver and muscles
RARE
  • Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (can be a sign of severe muscle damage)
  • Unusual tiredness or fever, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver inflammation)
  • Bleeding or bruising more easily than usual (signs of low platelets)
  • Skin reactions like rash, hives, redness, itching, swelling of face, eyelids, and lips
  • Swollen skin, breathing difficulties, dizziness (signs of severe allergic reaction)
  • Red or purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation)
  • Red, patchy rash mainly on the face, sometimes with tiredness, fever, nausea, loss of appetite (signs of lupus-like reaction)
  • Severe upper abdominal pain (signs of pancreatitis)
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Disturbed or decreased sensation
  • Symptoms of tendon inflammation, swelling, and irritation, possibly leading to tendon rupture
  • Breathing problems including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever
  • Diabetes (increased hunger/thirst, frequent urination), more likely if high blood sugar/fat levels, overweight, or high blood pressure
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness) and ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness)
  • Impotence
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia and nightmares
  • Memory loss
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to fluvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems or if your liver enzyme levels are high for no clear reason.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (a muscle weakness condition), as statins can sometimes worsen or cause it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease.

  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of muscle disease, or if you've had muscle problems with other cholesterol medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you drink a lot of alcohol regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a serious infection, very low blood pressure, do intense exercise, are having surgery, or have severe metabolic disorders (like uncontrolled diabetes or low potassium).
  • Tell your doctor if you have taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic) in the last 7 days.
  • If you have diabetes or are at risk of getting it, your doctor will monitor you closely.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get nausea, vomiting, yellow skin/eyes, confusion, or unusual tiredness, as these can be signs of liver damage.
  • Contact your doctor if you develop breathing difficulties, a long-lasting cough, or fever.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ongoing muscle weakness.
