How to Use

Dosage

Usually 1 tablet (20 mg) once a day, but your doctor may adjust this. For bulimia, the recommended dose is 3 tablets (60 mg) daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not chew them.

  • Muscle twitching, involuntary movements, problems with balance or coordination

  • Dilated pupils
  • Ringing in ears
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nosebleeds
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hair loss
  • Increased bruising, unexplained bruising or bleeding
  • Cold sweats
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Feeling hot or cold
  • General unwellness or unusual feeling
  • Restlessness or a strong urge to keep moving (psychomotor hyperactivity)
  • Low blood sodium
  • Low platelet count (increased risk of bleeding or bruising)
  • Low white blood cell count (increased risk of infections)
  • Serum sickness (delayed allergic reaction with rash, joint pain, fever, swollen lymph nodes, shock, low blood pressure)
  • Unusual, wild behavior
  • Hallucinations
  • Agitation
  • Panic attacks
  • Confusion
  • Stuttering
  • Aggressiveness
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms include fever, fast breathing/heart rate, sweating, muscle stiffness/tremors, confusion, extreme agitation)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis)
  • Severe sudden allergic reaction (shortness of breath, swollen throat, low blood pressure, stomach problems, racing heart, dizziness, shock)
  • Rapid swelling of tissues around the neck, face, mouth, and/or throat
  • Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Esophageal pain
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Lung problems
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Muscle pain
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Breast milk secretion
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Prolonged and painful erection

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to fluoxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are taking metoprolol for heart failure or other antidepressant medicines called MAO inhibitors.
  • If you get a rash or allergic reaction (like itching, swollen lips/face, or difficulty breathing), stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, seizures, or if seizures become more frequent, as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, even if you feel better.

  • This medicine may affect your judgment or coordination. Do not drive or use machines without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact your doctor immediately or go to a hospital.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. A long-acting. After discontinuation, the effect lasts for several weeks. Significant adverse effects include insomnia, headache, dizziness, nausea, tachycardia and low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
