How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take, as the dose depends on your infection. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 800 mg. For children, the maximum daily dose is 400 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, feeling sick, vomiting
  • Changes in blood tests for liver function
  • Rash
RARE
  • Decrease in red blood cells, causing pale skin, weakness, and shortness of breath
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping, feeling sleepy
  • Seizures, spinning sensation, dizziness, tingling, prickling or numbness, changes in taste
  • Constipation, indigestion, gas, dry mouth
  • Muscle pain
  • Liver damage and yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Drug rash, hives, itching, increased sweating
  • Tiredness, general feeling of being unwell, fever
  • Decreased white blood cells that fight infections and help stop bleeding
  • Red or purple skin discoloration due to low platelet count or other blood changes
  • Changes in blood chemistry (high cholesterol and fat levels)
  • Low potassium levels in the blood
  • Tremors
  • Abnormal EKG (heart electrical activity), changes in heart rate or rhythm
  • Liver failure
  • Allergic reactions (sometimes severe), including widespread blistering rash, skin peeling, severe skin reactions, swollen lips or face
  • Hair loss
  • Hypersensitivity reaction with rash, fever, swollen glands, increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell), and inflammation of internal organs (liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, and large intestine) (DRESS syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to fluconazole, other similar antifungal medicines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking astemizole, terfenadine (for allergies), cisapride (for stomach problems), pimozide (for mental health issues), quinidine (for irregular heartbeat), or erythromycin (an antibiotic).
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you get a widespread rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, severe skin reactions with blistering and peeling, or signs of liver problems (tiredness, loss of appetite, vomiting, yellow skin or eyes).
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically tells you to.
  • Be careful when driving or operating machines, as this medicine can cause dizziness or seizures.

  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have liver or kidney problems, heart conditions (including irregular heartbeat), unusual blood levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium, or signs of adrenal gland problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor liver values. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with warfarin. (updated 4.12.2023)
