How to Use

Dosage

Typically 50-400 mg daily or 150 mg as a single dose, depending on the infection type.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

Adults should not take more than 800 mg per day. The maximum daily dose for children is 400 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Changes in liver function blood tests
  • Rash
RARE
  • Anemia (pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath)
  • Insomnia or drowsiness
  • Seizures, dizziness, numbness, or changes in taste
  • Liver failure, yellowing of skin and eyes, hives
  • Changes in blood cells (white blood cells, platelets) or potassium levels
  • Heart rhythm disorders or changes in ECG

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome).
  • If you experience allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, or widespread itching, contact a doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or if you develop new symptoms like tiredness or yellowing of the skin.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a heart condition or unusual potassium, calcium, or magnesium levels in your blood.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor liver values. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with warfarin. (updated 4.12.2023)
