How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide the correct dose for you based on your infection and body weight.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow injection (infusion) into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 800 mg, and for children, it is 400 mg. Your doctor will determine your specific maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Stomach ache, diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting)
  • Changes in blood tests for your liver
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., sudden wheezing, swelling of face or lips, widespread itching or red skin patches)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., fewer white blood cells or platelets, which can cause easy bruising or bleeding; or fewer red blood cells, which can make you pale, weak, or short of breath)
  • Heart problems (like an uneven heart rhythm or changes in how fast your heart beats, seen on a heart test)
  • Hair loss
  • Feeling dizzy, tingly, numb, or changes in how things taste
  • Trouble sleeping or feeling very sleepy
  • Not wanting to eat
  • General unwell feeling, fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to fluconazole, other antifungals, or any ingredients in this medicine. Symptoms can include itching, red skin, or trouble breathing.
  • Stop treatment immediately and contact your doctor if you develop severe skin reactions, like a rash with blisters, peeling skin, or mouth sores, or if you get a widespread rash with fever and swollen glands (DRESS syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney, or heart problems, including irregular heartbeats.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are taking astemizole, terfenadine (for allergies), cisapride (for stomach problems), pimozide (for mental health issues), quinidine (for irregular heartbeat), or erythromycin (an antibiotic).
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, do not use this medicine unless your doctor specifically tells you to.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor liver values. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with warfarin. (updated 4.12.2023)
