How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, typically ranging from 0.5 mg to 30 mg daily, depending on your condition.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water, with or without food. Do not chew them. It is usually taken once daily in the morning.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 30 mg, but your doctor will set your specific limit.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, tremor
  • Feeling sleepy, difficulty sleeping, feeling nervous or agitated
  • Dry mouth (brush teeth often), increased saliva, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, constipation, diarrhea
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Weight gain
  • Unusual movements or stiff muscles, difficulty sitting or standing still
  • Blurred vision (difficulty reading small print)
RARE
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Problems with urination (difficulty or inability to pass urine)
  • Skin irritation (dermatitis), itching, increased sweating, skin rash
  • Memory loss
  • Rolling eyes (involuntary eye movements)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Joint pain
  • Changes in appetite (loss or increase)
  • Low blood pressure, hot flashes (with facial and neck redness)
  • Sexual problems (decreased sex drive, erection/ejaculation problems in men, menstrual issues or milk production in women at high doses)
  • Feeling confused
  • Yellow skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), liver problems
  • Convulsions (seizures)
  • Very high fever, very stiff muscles, and confusion (signs of a rare but serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Involuntary mouth and tongue movements (signs of another rare condition called tardive dyskinesia).
  • Blood clots, especially in the leg veins (swelling, pain, redness), potentially leading to chest pain and breathing problems if they travel to the lungs. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  • Changes in heart rhythm (QT interval prolongation, ventricular arrhythmias, torsades de pointes).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to flupentixol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a reduced level of consciousness.
  • Fluanxol should not be used for severe depression that requires hospital care or electroconvulsive therapy.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or operate machinery until these effects pass.

  • Avoid alcohol while taking Fluanxol.
  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has a history of blood clots, as this type of medicine can increase the risk of clots.
  • Fluanxol is not recommended for use in children or adolescents.
