How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for depression in adults is 1 mg daily. For schizophrenia and psychoses, it is 3–15 mg daily. Your doctor will prescribe your correct dose.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water, with or without food, usually once in the morning. Do not chew the tablets.

Important

The maximum dose is generally 3 mg daily for depression and 30 mg daily for psychoses. Your doctor will determine your appropriate maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, tremor
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia) or feeling very sleepy (drowsiness)
  • Dry mouth, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle stiffness, unusual movements, or restlessness (difficulty sitting or standing still)
  • Nervousness or agitation
  • Blurred vision (difficulty reading small text)
  • Increased saliva
RARE
  • High fever, severe muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating, and fast heartbeat (signs of a rare, serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Uncontrolled movements of the mouth and tongue (signs of a condition called tardive dyskinesia)
  • Blood clots in legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, difficulty breathing)
  • Changes in heart rhythm (e.g., slow or irregular heartbeat)
  • Memory loss or difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Skin rash, itching, increased sweating
  • Reduced sex drive, erection problems, or changes in menstrual periods
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), which may mean liver problems
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Fluanxol if you are allergic to its ingredients or if your consciousness is reduced.
  • Do not use Fluanxol if you have severe depression requiring hospital treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or heart disease, seizures, diabetes, or blood clots (personally or in your family).
  • Fluanxol is not suitable for children or adolescents.
  • If you have suicidal thoughts due to depression or anxiety, contact a doctor or go to the hospital immediately.

  • Avoid alcohol while taking Fluanxol, as it can increase drowsiness.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor for advice. Fluanxol is generally not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Fluanxol can cause drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
