How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take and for how long, depending on your infection.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth, exactly as your doctor has instructed.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor; do not exceed it.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Stomach pain, feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), diarrhea, and not wanting to eat.
  • Sore mouth, changes in tongue color, rough tongue, and a strange taste in your mouth (like metal).
  • Feeling confused, seeing or hearing things that aren't there, and feeling down.
  • Skin rash, itching, flushing, hives (red, itchy welts), and fever.
  • Temporary vision problems (blurry vision or seeing colors differently), hearing loss or problems, and ringing in the ears.
  • Nerve problems (neuropathy), headache, seizures, dizziness, spinning sensation, and brain-related issues like inflammation of the brain's covering.
  • Heart rhythm changes (especially if you are taking other medicines that can affect heart rhythm).
  • Dark urine (this is not harmful).
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., too few certain white blood cells or platelets).
  • Brain dysfunction, which can cause unsteady walking, speech problems, difficulty moving, jerky eye movements, and trembling.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels and blistering skin rash.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metronidazole or any other ingredients in Flagyl.
  • If you have a severe nervous system disease, use with caution as symptoms may worsen.
  • If you have Cockayne syndrome, your doctor will regularly check your liver function because this medicine can cause severe liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse that you are taking Flagyl before any blood tests, as it can affect the results.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience severe symptoms like strong stomach pain, yellow skin/eyes (jaundice), a bad rash, or flu-like symptoms.

  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment or for at least one day after, as it can cause severe nausea and discomfort.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy, confused, have seizures, or experience vision problems.
  • Do not use during the first three months of pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Ask your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider potential interactions especially with warfarin. May cause dysgeusia and dark-coloured urine. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for one day thereafter. (updated 6.11.2023)
