How to Use

Dosage

For Trichomonas infection, use one 500 mg suppository daily in the evening for 10 days. For bacterial vaginosis, use one suppository daily in the evening for 7 days. Your doctor will tell you which one applies.

Method

Insert the vaginal suppository deep into the back of the vagina, usually in the evening. Wash hands before and after use. If softened, cool it in cold water for a few minutes before opening.

Important

Use only one suppository per day, exactly as your doctor has told you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Local irritation
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Increased vaginal discharge
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., bad rash, trouble breathing, swelling of face or throat)
  • Liver problems (e.g., yellow skin/eyes, tiredness, stomach pain, dark urine)
  • Very serious skin rashes (e.g., widespread blisters, flu-like symptoms with rash and fever)
  • Brain or nervous system issues (e.g., confusion, seizures, problems with movement or speech, dizziness, headaches, vision changes like blurry or double vision, hearing loss, ringing in ears, nerve pain)
  • Changes in blood cells (seen in blood tests)
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, metallic taste in mouth, loss of appetite, pancreas inflammation
  • Depression
  • Heart rhythm changes

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metronidazole or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Stop using this medicine and get medical help right away if you have: a very bad allergic reaction (like a severe rash, swelling of your face or throat, or trouble breathing); signs of serious liver problems (like yellow skin or eyes, feeling very tired, stomach pain, or dark urine); or severe skin reactions (like widespread blisters, peeling skin, or flu-like symptoms with a rash and fever).
  • Use with caution if you have a severe nervous system disease, as symptoms might worsen.
  • If you have Cockayne syndrome, tell your doctor. Your liver function will need regular checks, as severe liver problems, even fatal, have been reported.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you are using Flagyl before having blood tests, as it can affect the results.

  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least one day after stopping, as it can cause unpleasant side effects like flushing and vomiting.
  • Do not use during the first three months of pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, confusion, seizures, or vision problems. If you experience these, do not drive or operate machinery.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. In topical use, there is absorption through mucous membranes and broken skin. Consider potential interactions especially with warfarin. (updated 21.10.2024)
