How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take one 0.5 mg capsule once a day. For children 10 years and older, the doctor will decide the correct dose based on their weight (either 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg).

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, once a day. You can take it with or without food. Do not open or crush the capsule.

Important

Do not take more than the dose your doctor has prescribed. For adults, this is typically one 0.5 mg capsule per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling tired, chills, sore throat, body aches, fever, cough with mucus.
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) with skin blisters, burning, itching, or pain.
  • Slow or irregular heart rate.
  • Basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) showing as pearly lumps or other skin changes.
  • Depression or anxiety.
  • Weight loss.
  • Pressure or pain in your cheeks or forehead (sinusitis).
  • Headache or migraine (severe headache, sometimes with nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity).
  • Diarrhea.
  • Back pain.
  • Dizziness.
  • Feeling weak.
  • Itchy, red, burning rash (eczema) or general itching.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Muscle or joint pain.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Hair loss.
  • Low white blood cell count (seen in blood tests).
  • Increased blood fat levels (triglycerides, seen in blood tests).
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Ringworm (a fungal skin infection).
  • Shortness of breath.
RARE
  • Pneumonia (lung infection) with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
  • Macular edema (swelling in the back of the eye), causing shadows, blind spots, blurred vision, or difficulty with colors/details.
  • Low platelet count, increasing risk of bleeding or bruising.
  • Melanoma (a type of skin cancer) with changes in size, shape, color of moles, or new, itchy, bleeding, or sore moles.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • PRES (Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome) with sudden severe headache, confusion, seizures, and/or vision problems.
  • Lymphoma (a type of cancer affecting the lymph system).
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer appearing as a firm red lump, crusting sore, or new sore on an old scar).
  • Abnormal ECG results (T-wave inversion, showing changes in your heart's electrical activity).
  • Kaposi's sarcoma (a tumor linked to human herpesvirus 8 infection).
  • Allergic reactions, including rash, itchy hives, swelling of lips, tongue, or face.
  • Signs of liver disease (including liver failure), such as yellow skin/eyes, nausea, vomiting, pain in upper right abdomen, dark urine, loss of appetite, fatigue, and abnormal liver test results.
  • PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy), a rare brain infection with symptoms like worsening MS, changes in mood or behavior, memory problems, or speech difficulties.
  • IRIS (Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome), an inflammatory reaction that can happen after stopping treatment.
  • Cryptococcal infections (fungal infections) like meningitis, with headache, stiff neck, light sensitivity, nausea, and/or confusion.
  • Merkel cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer), appearing as a painless, flesh-colored or reddish-blue lump, often on the face, head, or neck.
  • MS symptoms may return or become worse than before or during treatment after stopping this medicine.
  • Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (a condition where your body destroys its own red blood cells).
  • Swelling in your hands or feet (peripheral edema).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if your immune system is weak (due to illness or other medications).
  • Do not take if you have a severe active or chronic infection (like hepatitis or tuberculosis) or if your doctor suspects you have a rare brain infection called PML.
  • Do not take if you have active cancer.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have had a heart attack, chest pain, stroke, or certain heart problems in the last 6 months, or if you have irregular heart rhythms.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant or could become pregnant and are not using effective birth control.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to fingolimod or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • If you've never had chickenpox, your doctor may need to check your immunity and vaccinate you before starting this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that slow your heart rate or treat irregular heart rhythms, as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have vision problems, swelling in the back of your eye (macular edema), eye inflammation, or diabetes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea).
