How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide the right dose for you, usually 1-50 micrograms per kilogram of body weight, depending on your age, weight, and the type of surgery.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a continuous infusion. A doctor or nurse will administer it.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Muscle stiffness (which may include chest muscles)
  • Involuntary, repeated body movements
  • Drowsiness, dizziness
  • Vision problems
  • Fast or slow heart rate
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Vein pain
  • Choking due to throat muscle spasms
  • Breathing difficulties or wheezing
  • Short periods of stopped breathing (apnea) (doctor has medicine to prevent this)
  • Rash
  • Confusion after surgery
RARE
  • Elevated mood
  • Headache
  • Vein swelling and blood clotting (phlebitis)
  • Irregular blood pressure changes
  • Faster than normal breathing
  • Hiccups
  • Body temperature drop below normal or chills
  • Airway complication during anesthesia
  • Agitation after surgery
  • Difficulty swallowing

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to fentanyl or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to medicines called morphinomimetics (drugs similar to morphine).
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid, lung disease, a muscle disease called myasthenia gravis, or liver or kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of opioid misuse or alcoholism.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had a recent head injury, a severe undiagnosed headache, low blood volume, or pain in the upper right abdomen (gallbladder/bile duct issues).
  • Tell your doctor if you smoke or have had mood problems like depression or anxiety.
  • This medicine should not be used during childbirth as it can affect the baby's breathing.
