How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the correct patch strength for you.

Method

Apply one patch to a clean, dry, flat area of your upper body or arm. For children, apply to the upper back. Change the patch every 3 days (72 hours) at the same time of day, always removing the old one first.

Important

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will determine the maximum safe patch strength for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), or having trouble going to the bathroom (constipation)
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Headache
  • Allergic reaction
  • Not feeling hungry (loss of appetite)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling down or sad (depression)
  • Muscle shaking or twitching
  • Strange feelings on your skin, like tingling or numbness
  • Feeling like everything is spinning (vertigo)
  • Heart beating fast or unevenly
  • High blood pressure
  • Feeling like you can't get enough air (shortness of breath)
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Stomach pain or indigestion
  • Sweating a lot
  • Itchy skin, rash, or redness
  • Trouble urinating or emptying your bladder
  • Feeling very tired, weak, or generally unwell
  • Feeling cold
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
RARE
  • Feeling very agitated or confused about time and place
  • Feeling an intense sense of happiness (euphoria)
  • Less feeling or sensitivity in your skin
  • Memory problems
  • Blurred eyesight
  • Slow heartbeat or low blood pressure
  • Bluish skin, which means low oxygen in your blood
  • Stomach not moving food (ileus)
  • Eczema, allergic reaction, or other skin changes where the patch was
  • Feeling like you have the flu
  • Changes in body temperature
  • Fever
  • Problems getting or keeping an erection, or other sexual difficulties
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Very small pupils in your eyes
  • Breathing stopping for short times during sleep (apnea)

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can cause very serious side effects, including slow breathing, in people who don't usually take strong pain relievers like opioids. This can be life-threatening.
  • Fentanyl STADA patches can be very dangerous, even deadly, for children, even used ones. Keep all patches out of sight and reach of children.
  • If a patch accidentally sticks to another person, especially a child, remove it immediately and call a doctor right away. It can cause serious harm or even death.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have short-term pain or if you have severe breathing problems.
  • If you or someone else notices unusual drowsiness or slow, shallow breathing, remove the patch immediately and get urgent medical help. This can be life-threatening.

  • Avoid exposing the patch to direct heat, like heating pads, hot baths, saunas, or direct sunlight, as this can cause too much medicine to be absorbed.
  • This medicine contains fentanyl, an opioid, and can cause dependence or addiction.
  • Do not drink alcohol while using Fentanyl STADA without first talking to your doctor.
  • Do not use Fentanyl STADA during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy or dizzy, so do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Serotonergic. Intended for the treatment of cancer pain. Not suitable for initiating opioid medication. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential significant interactions. (updated 24.3.2025)
