How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the correct dose for you.

Method

Apply the patch to your skin and change it every three days (72 hours), always at the same time of day. Always remove the old patch before applying a new one.

Important

Do not use more patches than prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, or constipation

  • Fast or uneven heartbeat (palpitations)
  • High blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Stomach pain and indigestion
  • Excessive sweating
  • Itching, rash, and redness of the skin
  • Inability to urinate or empty the bladder completely
  • Feeling very tired, weak, or generally unwell
  • Feeling cold
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
RARE
  • Feeling agitated or losing sense of time and place
  • Strong feeling of happiness (euphoria)
  • Reduced sense of touch or sensitivity in the skin
  • Memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow heartbeat or low blood pressure
  • Bluish skin due to low oxygen in the blood
  • Lack of bowel movement (ileus)
  • Itchy rash (eczema), allergic reaction, or other skin problem where the patch is applied
  • Flu-like illness
  • Feeling of altered body temperature
  • Fever
  • Muscle twitches
  • Difficulty getting and keeping an erection (impotence) and problems with sexual intercourse
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Small pupils in the eyes
  • Temporary pauses in breathing

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can be life-threatening if you have not regularly used strong pain medications (opioids) before.
  • Patches are dangerous for children and can cause death if a child gets one on their skin or in their mouth. Keep out of reach of children.
  • This patch is only for you. Be careful not to transfer the patch to another person's skin, especially a child's, as it can cause severe breathing problems or death. If this happens, remove the patch immediately and contact a doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have breathing problems while sleeping, such as pauses in breathing or low oxygen levels in your blood.
  • This medicine can cause unusual sleepiness and slow or shallow breathing, which can be dangerous.

  • If you get a fever while using the patch, tell your doctor, as fever can increase how much medicine your body absorbs.
  • Avoid direct heat on the patch (e.g., heating pads, hot baths, sun) as it can increase the amount of medicine your body absorbs.
  • This medicine contains an opioid and can cause addiction.
  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly. It can cause withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor about how to stop.
  • Using this medicine with sedatives or alcohol can increase the risk of drowsiness, breathing problems, and coma, which can be life-threatening.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without first talking to your doctor.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness or dizziness, so do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Serotonergic. Intended for the treatment of cancer pain. Not suitable for initiating opioid medication. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential significant interactions. (updated 24.3.2025)
