How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the correct dose for you based on your pain and general condition.

Method

Change the patch every three days (72 hours), always at the same time of day. Always remove the old patch before applying a new one.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation

  • Seeing, hearing, or smelling things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Muscle tremors or spasms
  • Unusual skin sensations, like tingling or numbness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • High blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Stomach pain and indigestion
  • Excessive sweating
  • Itching, rash, and redness of the skin
  • Inability to urinate or empty the bladder completely
  • Severe tiredness, weakness, or general feeling of illness
  • Feeling cold
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
RARE
  • Agitation or disorientation
  • Strong feeling of well-being (euphoria)
  • Decreased sense of touch or sensitivity, especially in the skin
  • Memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow heartbeat or low blood pressure
  • Bluish skin due to low oxygen levels in the blood
  • Lack of bowel movements (ileus)
  • Itchy rash (eczema), allergic reaction, or other skin problems at the patch site
  • Flu-like illness
  • Feeling of changed body temperature
  • Fever
  • Muscle twitching
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection (impotence) and problems with sexual intercourse
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Constriction of pupils (miosis)
  • Temporary pauses in breathing (apnea)

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can cause life-threatening effects if you have not previously used strong opioid pain medications.
  • This medicine is life-threatening for children. Keep patches (both new and used) out of the sight and reach of children.
  • The patch can make you very drowsy and slow or shallow your breathing. These symptoms can be dangerous, especially if you are not used to strong pain medications.
  • Do not expose the patch to direct heat, such as heating pads, hot baths, or saunas, as this can increase the absorption of the medicine.
  • Never cut the patch into smaller pieces.

  • Do not drink alcohol while using this medicine without first discussing it with your doctor.
  • If you develop a fever while using the patch, tell your doctor, as this can increase the amount of medicine in your body.
  • Repeated use of this medicine can lead to dependence and addiction, which can result in a life-threatening overdose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Serotonergic. Intended for the treatment of cancer pain. Not suitable for initiating opioid medication. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential significant interactions. (updated 24.3.2025)
