How to Use

Dosage

Apply one patch every three days (72 hours), unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Method

Apply the patch to a flat, clean, dry, and cool area of your upper body or arm. For children, always apply to the upper back to prevent removal. Remove the old patch before applying a new one at the same time of day, every three days.

Important

Do not apply more than one patch at a time, and do not change it more often than every three days (72 hours), unless directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), or constipation.
  • Feeling sleepy.
  • Feeling dizzy.
  • Headache.
  • Mild allergic reaction.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Feeling sad (depression).
  • Feeling restless or confused.
  • Seeing, hearing, or smelling things that aren't real (hallucinations).
  • Muscle shakes or twitches.
  • Tingling or prickling skin.
  • Feeling like you are spinning.
  • Fast or uneven heartbeat.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Stomach pain or upset stomach.
  • Sweating a lot.
  • Itchy skin, rash, or red skin.
  • Trouble peeing or emptying your bladder fully.
  • Feeling very tired, weak, or generally unwell.
  • Feeling cold.
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.
RARE
  • Feeling restless or confused about time and place.
  • A strong feeling of happiness (euphoria).
  • Less feeling in your skin or touch.
  • Memory loss.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Slow heartbeat or low blood pressure.
  • Blue skin due to low oxygen in the blood.
  • Bowel blockage (ileus).
  • Itchy rash, allergic reaction, or other skin problems where the patch was.
  • Flu-like sickness.
  • Feeling that your body temperature has changed.
  • Fever.
  • Muscle jerks.
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection, or other sexual problems.
  • Trouble swallowing.

Important Warnings

  • This medicine, even a used patch, can be dangerous and even deadly for children or other people it's not prescribed for. Keep it out of reach and sight of children in a safe place.
  • This medicine can cause severe drowsiness and slow breathing, which can be life-threatening. If someone becomes unusually sleepy or breathes slowly/shallowly, remove the patch immediately, call a doctor or go to the nearest hospital, and keep the person awake and moving.
  • Do not expose the patch to direct heat (like heat pads, hot baths, or direct sun) as this can make your body absorb too much medicine.
  • Do not cut the patch into smaller pieces as its safety and effectiveness are not known if cut.
  • This medicine contains fentanyl, an opioid, which can cause dependence and addiction.

  • Do not drink alcohol or drive/use machines while using this medicine, as it can make you sleepy or dizzy. Talk to your doctor first.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Serotonergic. Intended for the treatment of cancer pain. Not suitable for initiating opioid medication. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential significant interactions. (updated 24.3.2025)
