How to Use

Dosage

One tablet once a day.

Method

Take one tablet by mouth on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after food), preferably at bedtime to reduce side effects like dizziness. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Important

Do not exceed one tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Rash (red spots or patches, sometimes with blisters and skin swelling, which may be allergic reactions)
  • Weakness
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (excess lactic acid in the blood) symptoms include deep, fast breathing, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) that may cause severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme).
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Mental health changes (anger, suicidal thoughts, unusual thoughts, delusions, trouble thinking, mood changes, hallucinations, suicide attempts, personality changes/psychosis, catatonia - a state where a patient becomes motionless and silent for a period).
  • Stomach pain due to inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Forgetfulness, confusion, seizures, slurred speech, tremors.
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, itching, or stomach pain due to liver inflammation.
  • Damage to kidney tubules.
  • Liver failure, sometimes leading to death or liver transplant (mostly in patients with pre-existing liver disease, but some cases in patients without).
  • Kidney inflammation, frequent urination, and feeling thirsty.
  • Back pain due to kidney problems, such as kidney failure.
  • Softening of bones (osteomalacia), sometimes with bone pain and fractures, possibly due to damage to kidney tubule cells.
  • Fatty liver.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Coordination and balance problems.
  • Anxiety or depression.
  • Sleep problems, unusual dreams, difficulty concentrating, drowsiness.
  • Pain, stomach pain.
  • Indigestion, bloating, gas (discomfort after meals).
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Tiredness.
  • Itching.
  • Skin discoloration, e.g., dark patches often starting on hands or soles of feet.
  • Bone loss.
  • Muscle breakdown, muscle pain or weakness.
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count).
  • Vertigo, ringing or buzzing in the ears, or other persistent ear noise.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Chills.
  • Breast enlargement in men.
  • Decreased sex drive.
  • Flushing.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Increased appetite.
  • Itchy skin rash caused by sunlight.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Fatrino if you are allergic to efavirenz, emtricitabine, tenofovir, tenofovir disoproxil, or any other ingredient in this medicine, or if you have severe liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, an abnormal heart rhythm (called prolonged QT interval), a family history of sudden heart death, or abnormal levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood.
  • Do not take Fatrino with certain other medicines, including some allergy medicines, heart medicines, stomach acid reducers, hepatitis C treatments, migraine medicines, sleeping pills, medicines for mental illness, St. John's Wort, antifungal medicines, antibiotics, antimalarials, or methadone. Always tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you are taking.
  • Even with this medicine, you can still pass HIV to others. Fatrino does not cure HIV infection, and you may still get other infections linked to HIV.
  • You must stay under your doctor's care while taking Fatrino.

  • Do not take Fatrino with other medicines that contain efavirenz, emtricitabine, tenofovir disoproxil, tenofovir alafenamide, lamivudine, or adefovir dipivoxil.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney disease, or if tests show kidney problems. Fatrino is not recommended for moderate to severe kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had mental health problems like depression, or if you have misused alcohol or drugs.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had seizures (epilepsy attacks) before or if you take medicines for seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had liver disease, such as chronic active hepatitis. The risk of serious liver problems is higher if you have chronic hepatitis B or C. Your doctor may check your liver function with blood tests.
  • Do not get pregnant while taking Fatrino or for 12 weeks after stopping it. Use reliable birth control. Do not breastfeed while taking Fatrino, as the medicine can pass to your baby and harm them.
  • Fatrino can cause dizziness, trouble concentrating, and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these effects.
