How to Use

Dosage

The dose varies depending on your condition and immune system; always follow your doctor's specific instructions. For shingles, it's typically 500 mg three times a day; for genital herpes, it can range from 125 mg twice a day to 500 mg three times a day.

Method

You can take Famvir tablets with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose can be up to 1500 mg (e.g., 500 mg three times a day).

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Nausea

  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

  • Abnormal liver function test results
RARE
  • Severe blistering on the skin or mucous membranes of the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals (signs of a severe allergic skin reaction).
  • Unexplained bruising, red or purple spots on the skin, or nosebleeds (signs of decreased platelet count).
  • Swelling under the skin (e.g., swelling of the face, around the eyes, eyelids, or throat).
  • Yellowing of the skin and/or eyes (signs of jaundice).
  • Red skin patches, itching, burning (signs of inflamed blood vessels).
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rash, itching, hives, cough, wheezing, dizziness, changes in consciousness, low blood pressure with general itching, skin redness, swelling of the face/throat; bluish discoloration of the lips, tongue, or skin (signs of a severe allergic reaction).
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness (especially in elderly people)
  • Itchy rash (hives)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Palpitations (signs of an abnormal heart rhythm)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Famvir if you are allergic to famciclovir, penciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have (or have had) kidney problems; your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • Inform your doctor if you have immune system disorders.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems.
  • To prevent spreading genital herpes, practice safe sex, use condoms, and avoid sexual contact if you have sores or blisters on your genitals, even if you are on Famvir treatment.
