How to Use

Dosage

One bag per day.

Method

Infuse the fluid into your belly over 10-20 minutes. The fluid should stay in your belly for 6-12 hours for CAPD or 14-16 hours for APD. Warm the bag to 37 °C using a heating plate, never a water bath.

Important

Do not use more than one bag per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Red, flaky, itchy skin or rash.
  • Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or thirsty.
  • Less blood volume in your body.
  • Abnormal results in lab tests.
  • Weakness, headache, or feeling tired.
  • Swollen ankles or legs.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Ringing in the ears.
RARE
  • High blood pressure.
  • Swelling in your ankles, legs, or under your eyes, shortness of breath, or chest pain because of too much fluid in your body.
  • A severe allergic reaction, which may include swelling of your face, throat, or around your eyes.
  • Abdominal pain or cloudy fluid drained from your belly, which can be a sign of infection.
  • Chills (feeling cold and shaky).
  • Severe skin reactions like a widespread red rash, peeling skin, red patches, blisters, or inflamed blood vessels.
  • Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (a rare, serious complication where your belly lining gets inflamed and fibrous tissue grows).
  • Bleeding, pus, swelling, pain, or infection around where your catheter enters your body, or problems with the catheter itself.
  • Low or high blood sugar levels.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), loss of appetite, dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, gas, or stomach upset.
  • Swelling in your belly or a hernia (a bulge in your groin).
  • Changes in your blood tests or liver function tests.
  • Gaining or losing weight.
  • Pain, fever, or generally feeling unwell.
  • Heart problems such as a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
  • Anemia (low red blood cells), or changes in your white blood cells or platelets.
  • Numbness, tingling, or a burning feeling.
  • Restlessness or increased movements.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Loss of taste.
  • Fluid in your lungs, shortness of breath, coughing, or hiccups.
  • Kidney pain.
  • Nail problems.
  • Muscle cramps, or pain in your bones, joints, or back.
  • A drop in blood pressure when you stand up (orthostatic hypotension).
  • Infections, including flu-like symptoms or abscesses.
  • Abnormal thinking, feeling anxious, or nervous.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to icodextrin or starch products.
  • Do not use if you have severe lactic acidosis (too much acid in your blood).
  • Do not use if you have abdominal problems that cannot be fixed by surgery or increase your risk of belly infection.
  • Do not use if your abdominal lining is badly scarred and not working well.
  • Call your doctor right away if you have stomach pain or if the fluid you drain from your belly looks cloudy or has particles. This could be a sign of infection.

  • Do not stop this treatment without your doctor's permission, as stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
  • If you have diabetes, make sure to use a special blood sugar test that specifically measures glucose. Your doctor will tell you which one to use.
  • This treatment might make you feel tired, weak, dizzy, or have blurry vision. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
