How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. For osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis, it's usually 30-90 mg once daily. For gout, 120 mg once daily for up to 8 days. For pain after dental surgery, 90 mg once daily for up to 3 days.

Method

Take one tablet by mouth once a day, with or without food. Taking it without food may make it work faster if you need quick pain relief.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes. Maximum daily doses vary by condition. If you have mild liver problems, do not take more than 60 mg per day. If you have moderate liver problems, do not take more than 30 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Dry socket (pain and swelling after tooth extraction)
  • Fluid retention causing swelling in lower legs and/or feet
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations), irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • High blood pressure
  • Constipation, gas, stomach lining inflammation (gastritis), heartburn, diarrhea, upset stomach/indigestion, nausea, vomiting, esophagus inflammation
  • Changes in liver function blood test results
  • Bruising
  • Weakness and tiredness, flu-like symptoms
RARE
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Uncomfortable or burning pain when urinating (may be a sign of urinary tract infection)
  • Tiredness, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet, and pale skin (may be signs of low red blood cell count)
  • Unexplained bruising or bleeding that occurs more often or lasts longer than usual (may be signs of low platelet count)
  • Increased or decreased appetite, weight gain
  • Anxiety, depression, reduced mental sharpness, hallucinations
  • Taste changes, sleeplessness, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, reduced skin sensitivity, drowsiness
  • Blurred vision, eye irritation and redness
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus), vertigo (spinning sensation when still)
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity
  • Flushing, inflammation of blood vessels
  • Cough, nosebleed
  • Changes in bowel habits, dry mouth, irritable bowel
  • Muscle cramps or spasms, muscle pain or stiffness
  • High blood potassium levels, changes in kidney function blood or urine test results
  • Confusion, restlessness
  • Low blood sodium levels

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to Etoricoxib, aspirin, or other similar pain medicines (NSAIDs like ibuprofen).
  • Do not take if you have a stomach ulcer or bleeding in your stomach or intestines.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver, kidney, or heart disease, including uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart failure, or have had a heart attack or stroke.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are under 16 years old.
  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if you get a rash, hives, itching, or swelling of your face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat that makes it hard to breathe or swallow.

  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if you have shortness of breath, severe chest pain, bad headache with confusion, or blurred vision with swollen ankles. These could be signs of serious blood pressure or heart/brain issues.
  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if your skin or eyes turn yellow, your urine gets dark, your stools are pale, or you feel tired, feverish, sick, weak, or have stomach pain. These could be signs of serious liver problems.
  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if you have severe or lasting stomach pain, black tar-like stools, bloody stools, or vomit blood.
  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if you get severe skin blistering, bleeding in your lips, eyes, mouth, or nose, or skin peeling.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For short-term use only. Consider adverse renal effect in chronic kidney disease. Do not use in severe renal impairment. May increase swelling, worsen renal and cardiac failure and cause cardiovascular events. Risk of gastrointestinal bleeding less than with traditional NSAIDs. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 16.9.2024)
