How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults and young people 16 years and older is 15-25 mg per kg of body weight per day.

Method

Take your daily dose once in the morning, with or without food; the tablets can be divided into two equal parts.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 2000 mg (2 grams).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Vision problems (optic neuritis), including worse color vision or blurry vision, which usually get better when you stop the medicine.
  • Tuberculosis symptoms returning or getting worse (paradoxical reactions), such as cough, fever, tiredness, shortness of breath, headache, not wanting to eat, weight loss, or weakness.
RARE
  • Kidney damage.
  • Severe allergic reactions that can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure (anaphylactic shock).
  • Bleeding in the retina of the eye.
  • Liver damage, which can sometimes be life-threatening.
  • A specific type of kidney inflammation.
  • Lung inflammation caused by allergies or pneumonia.
  • Severe skin reactions like red patches, blisters, or peeling skin on the body, mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, TEN, DRESS).
  • Fewer white blood cells (leukopenia).
  • Other allergic reactions.
  • Increased uric acid in the blood.
  • Changes in sensation, such as tingling, numbness, burning pain, or weakness in hands and feet; also dizziness, headache, confusion, hallucinations, or feeling generally weak or disoriented.
  • Red or itchy skin rashes (lichen ruber, inflammatory redness).
  • Fewer platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia).
  • Joint pain or gout attacks.
  • Fever.
  • Loss of appetite, heartburn, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) or abnormal liver test results.
  • Fewer or more specific types of white blood cells (neutropenia, eosinophilia).
  • Gas, bloated stomach, nausea, or a metallic taste in the mouth.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to ethambutol hydrochloride or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine alone; it must always be used with other tuberculosis medicines.
  • If you have or have had severe skin rashes, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after taking ethambutol, do not take this medicine.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if your vision gets worse, you have problems with color vision (especially red-green), or notice blind spots.
  • This medicine can make it difficult to drive or use machines, so avoid these activities during treatment.

  • If you are taking antacids containing aluminum, take them at least four hours apart from Ethambutol Orion.
  • Tell your doctor if your tuberculosis symptoms return or get worse, such as cough, fever, tiredness, or trouble breathing.
  • Seek medical help if you feel generally unwell, have nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or yellowing of the skin or eyes (signs of liver problems).
