How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet every day.

Method

Take the tablet whole, with or without food, at roughly the same time each day. When you finish one 28-day pack, start a new one right away.

Important

Do not take more than one 1 mg tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Allergic reaction (symptoms like hives, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, dizziness, sweating)

  • Blood clots in veins (venous thromboembolism)
  • Heartburn (digestive issues)
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence or abdominal bloating
  • Gallstones
  • Itching or hives
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding
  • Worsening of migraine
  • Stroke
  • Insomnia
  • Epilepsy
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Worsening of asthma
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • High blood pressure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you have or have had breast cancer, or if it is suspected.
  • Do not take if you have or have had a cancer sensitive to estrogen, like uterine lining cancer, or if it is suspected.
  • Do not take if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have untreated thickening of the uterine lining (endometrial hyperplasia).
  • Do not take if you have or have had a blood clot in a vein, such as in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism).

  • Do not take if you have a blood clotting disorder (e.g., protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency).
  • Do not take if you have or recently had a disease caused by blood clots in arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke, or angina.
  • Do not take if you have or have had liver disease and your liver function tests are not yet normal.
  • Do not take if you have a rare inherited blood disorder called porphyria.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to estradiol or any other ingredient in Estrofem.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if your skin or eyes turn yellow (jaundice), as this may indicate liver problems.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if your blood pressure increases significantly (symptoms may include headache, tiredness, and dizziness).
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience swelling of the face, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty swallowing, or hives with breathing problems, as these may be signs of angioedema.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you get a migraine-like headache for the first time.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of a blood clot, such as painful swelling and redness in the legs, sudden chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

The classification depends on the dosage form. Systemic use (for example estrogen patch, tablet, gel): Avoid use in older adults. In systemic use, consider potential adverse effects, such as risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism. Consider potential interactions.
