Estrofem is a hormone replacement therapy containing estradiol, used to relieve menopause symptoms and prevent osteoporosis in women who cannot use other medicines for this purpose.

How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet every day.

Method

Take the tablet at approximately the same time each day. After finishing one 28-day pack, start a new pack immediately.

Important

One tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Leg cramps
  • Breast pain, tenderness or enlargement
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) with symptoms like hives, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure.
  • Vision disturbances
  • Blood clots in veins (venous thromboembolism)
  • Heartburn (indigestion)
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence or feeling of bloating in the abdomen
  • Gallstones
  • Itching or hives (urticaria)
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding
  • Worsening of migraine
  • Stroke
  • Insomnia
  • Epilepsy
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Worsening of asthma
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • High blood pressure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Estrofem if you have or have had breast cancer or any estrogen-sensitive cancer.
  • Do not take Estrofem if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding or untreated thickening of the womb lining.
  • Do not take Estrofem if you have or have had blood clots in a vein (e.g., in legs or lungs) or a blood clotting disorder.
  • Do not take Estrofem if you have had a heart attack, stroke, or angina.
  • Do not take Estrofem if you have liver disease and your liver test results are still abnormal.

  • Stop taking Estrofem and contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.
  • Stop taking Estrofem and contact your doctor immediately if you notice yellowing of your skin or eyes, swelling of your face/tongue/throat with breathing difficulties, a significant increase in blood pressure, or symptoms of a blood clot (e.g., painful swollen leg, sudden chest pain, trouble breathing).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

The classification depends on the dosage form. Systemic use (for example estrogen patch, tablet, gel): Avoid use in older adults. In systemic use, consider potential adverse effects, such as risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism. Consider potential interactions.
