How to Use

Dosage

The Estring ring releases 7.5 micrograms of estradiol per day. The ring should be replaced with a new one every three months.

Method

Wash your hands thoroughly. Stand with one foot on a chair or lie on your back with your legs bent. Squeeze the ring into an oval shape and insert it as deeply as possible into the vagina, upwards and backwards.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 7.5 micrograms of estradiol, released from the ring.

  • Uncomfortable feeling in external genitalia
  • Vaginal irritation or discomfort
  • Urinary and genital itching
  • Breast symptoms (e.g., swelling, pain)
  • Flu-like symptoms
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Vaginal sores or ulcers
  • Ring getting stuck to the vaginal wall

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Estring if you are allergic to estradiol or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use Estring if you have or have had breast cancer, or any cancer sensitive to estrogen (e.g., uterine lining cancer).
  • If you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, do not use Estring.
  • Do not use Estring if you have had a blood clot (e.g., in a leg or lung), or if you have a blood clotting disorder or a recent heart attack/stroke.
  • Do not use Estring if you have had liver disease and your liver tests have not returned to normal.

  • If you become pregnant while using Estring, stop immediately and contact your doctor.
  • Stop using Estring immediately and contact your doctor if you experience severe symptoms like yellow skin, high blood pressure, a new migraine headache, or signs of a blood clot (e.g., leg pain, chest pain, shortness of breath).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

The classification depends on the dosage form. Systemic use (for example estrogen patch, tablet, gel): Avoid use in older adults. In systemic use, consider potential adverse effects, such as risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism. Consider potential interactions.
