Estradot

Estradot is a skin patch containing estrogen, used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to relieve menopause symptoms in women who have not had a natural period for at least 12 months.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, aiming for the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.

Method

Apply one patch to your lower abdomen, below the waistline, twice a week (every 3-4 days). Change the patch on the same two days each week, for example, Monday and Thursday. Do not apply to breasts or near them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 100 micrograms of estradiol released from one patch.

Possible Side Effects

  • Skin reactions where the patch is applied (like irritation, redness, itching, burning, rash, dry skin, swelling, bruising)
  • Breast pain, tender breasts
  • Menstrual pain, changes in periods
  • Feeling down, nervous, mood changes

  • Nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating
  • Acne, general skin rash, dry skin, itching (general)
  • Breast enlargement
  • Vaginal discharge, irregular vaginal bleeding, strong womb contractions, vaginal infection
  • Overgrowth of the womb lining
  • Pain in back, arms, legs, wrists, or ankles
  • Weakness, lack of energy
  • Fluid retention and swelling in hands or feet
  • Weight changes
RARE
  • Migraine
  • Dizziness
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Vomiting
  • Skin discoloration, dark spots on skin (chloasma)
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
  • Gallstones or gallbladder problems
  • Hair loss or excessive hair growth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Non-cancerous growths in the womb (fibroids)
  • Cysts near fallopian tubes, polyps on the cervix
  • Changes in sex drive
  • General allergic reactions (e.g., rash)
  • Hives
  • Trouble processing carbohydrates
  • Involuntary movements (e.g., of eyes, head, or neck)
  • Discomfort with contact lenses
  • Severe skin damage
  • Painful, red lumps on the skin (erythema nodosum)
  • Rash with target-shaped redness or sores (erythema multiforme)
  • Non-cancerous breast lump

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Estradot if you have or have had breast cancer, or if breast cancer is suspected.
  • Do not use Estradot if you have or are suspected to have an estrogen-sensitive cancer, such as cancer of the uterine lining.
  • Do not use Estradot if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • Do not use Estradot if you have or have had a blood clot in a vein, for example in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism).
  • Do not use Estradot if you have or have recently had a disease caused by a blood clot in an artery, such as a heart attack, stroke, or angina pectoris.

  • Stop using Estradot and contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant. Do not use Estradot if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Stop using Estradot and seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
  • Stop using Estradot and contact your doctor immediately if you notice signs of a blood clot, such as painful swelling and redness in the leg, sudden chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
  • Stop using Estradot and contact your doctor immediately if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, your urine becomes dark, or your skin becomes itchy (signs of liver problems).
  • Stop using Estradot and contact your doctor immediately if you notice changes in your breasts, such as dimpling of the skin, changes in the nipple, or any lumps you can see or feel.
  • Stop using Estradot and contact your doctor immediately if you get migraine-like headaches for the first time.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

The classification depends on the dosage form. Systemic use (for example estrogen patch, tablet, gel): Avoid use in older adults. In systemic use, consider potential adverse effects, such as risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism. Consider potential interactions.
