Estradot

Estradot is a skin patch containing the female hormone estrogen, used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to relieve menopause symptoms and, for some dosages, to prevent bone loss in women whose periods stopped at least 12 months ago.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, aiming for the lowest effective amount to manage your symptoms.

Method

Apply the Estradot patch to your lower abdomen, below the waistline. Change the patch twice a week, every three or four days, always on the same two days of the week.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose. The highest available patch releases 100 micrograms of estradiol per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Skin reactions at the patch site (like irritation, burning, rash, dryness, bruising, swelling)
  • Breast pain, tenderness, or enlargement
  • Menstrual pain, irregular periods, or heavy bleeding
  • Feeling down, nervous, or mood swings
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach pain, or bloating
  • Acne, skin rash, dry skin, or itching
  • Vaginal discharge or irregular bleeding from the vagina
  • Strong uterine contractions or uterine lining overgrowth
  • Pain in your back, arms, legs, wrists, or ankles
  • Feeling weak, or swelling in your hands and feet
  • Weight changes
RARE
  • Migraine or dizziness
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Vomiting or changes in skin color
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
  • Blood clots
  • Gallstones
  • Hair loss or muscle weakness
  • Benign uterine muscle growths or cysts near fallopian tubes
  • Growths on the cervix (polyps) or changes in sexual desire
  • Allergic reactions (like hives, severe swelling of face/tongue, or trouble breathing)
  • Discomfort with contact lenses
  • Excessive hair growth

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Estradot if you have or have had breast cancer, estrogen-sensitive cancer (like uterine cancer), unexplained vaginal bleeding, untreated uterine lining overgrowth, or a blood clot (e.g., in the leg or lung).
  • Contact your doctor immediately and stop using the patch if your skin or eyes turn yellow, you have a severe allergic reaction (like facial swelling or breathing difficulties), your blood pressure rises significantly, you get a migraine-like headache for the first time, you become pregnant, or you notice signs of a blood clot (like sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, or leg swelling and redness).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

The classification depends on the dosage form. Systemic use (for example estrogen patch, tablet, gel): Avoid use in older adults. In systemic use, consider potential adverse effects, such as risk of cardiovascular diseases and venous thromboembolism. Consider potential interactions.
